Our Story

The idea for Frio Canyon started over a bottle of wine shared among old friends.

Joining his love of Leakey, Texas with his appreciation of great wine, Tim Leach planted the first rows of grapes at Frio Canyon in 2008 with the mission of establishing a quality vineyard on the property his family had been gathering for decades. The idea took root, and the vineyard now has nearly 18 acres of grapes planted on two locations within the canyon.

The locations for the vineyards were selected for their soil content and excellent drainage. Both vineyards benefit from having sites tucked against the hills of the Frio Canyon; locations which provide steady air flow. The air stream has a moderating effect on the temperature and climate.

The pioneering spirit continues as the team constructs an on-site winery in a cave built into the side of the hill overlooking the old vineyard. The 10,000 square foot cave will house facilities to produce, barrel and bottle our 100% estate-grown wines. Once completed, the cave will be the first of its kind in Texas.
